Press Statement from DLR Roger Casement Summer School

2022 Summer School Offerings

The fourth DLR Roger Casement Summer School is taking place in this, the year when the Casement memorial statue in Dún Laoghaire will be unveiled. Happening at its usual venue, the Dún Laoghaire Lexicon on 5-7 May, the 2022 School has a strong Programme.

Top of the bill is a politically controversial debate between Clare Daly and Barry Andrews on the topic, ‘What the war in Ukraine means for Ireland and the EU’. Chaired by well-known journalist, Deaglán de Breadún, it will provide an opportunity for a rare exchange of views on the tragedy that is unfolding in Ukraine.

For the first time we are this year holding a Musical Evening in which renowned tenor Paul Linehan will perform songs by Thomas Moore, Thomas Davis and Percy French (Moore’s songs were a favourite of Casement). We will also have readings describing Thomas Moore’s life-long adherence to the ideals of the United Irishmen and, in private and public life, his outspoken antipathy to the rigid morality of his times.

The challenge represented by the Ukraine war will get further attention when human rights activist Roos Demol presents a paper on the treatment of refugees in Ireland. This year our offering in collaboration with Front Line Defenders is a talk on human rights in Afghanistan by Sayed Anosh. As always, these sessions will be chaired by Mary Lawlor, currently a UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders.

In what will be a busy afternoon on Friday 6 May the School will include a lecture on the National War of Independence in Dún Laoghaire by Padraig Yeates, a screening of “The Secrets of Putumayo” (film about Casement’s work in South America) and, in collaboration with Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council (DLR), the launch of The Casement Memorial Statue, a beautifully designed book, written by Angus Mitchell and published by DLR.

We are pleased once again to have the involvement of present and former officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs. In a session chaired by former Minister of State Martin Mansergh, Ruarí de Búrca will present on “Casement, Ireland and the United Nations”, and Philip McDonagh will give a poetry reading, as well as chairing the Friday afternoon sessions.

The lectures on Saturday morning will be by Tom Daly of the Ulster GAA on Casement Park Stadium in Belfast, and Dr Hilary Dully on the memoirs of journalist and Easter Rising participant Máire Comerford (1893-1982). These will be chaired by author and former Sinn Féin publicity director, Danny Morrison.

As Roger Casement attracts admiration from a diverse cross section of Irish opinion, the organisers of the Summer School take pride in holding it as a space of culture, tolerance and intellectual inquiry.
